I'm naming this after two lesser-known Catholic intellectuals of the past century:
- E.F. Schumacher, that great economist who you may know as the author of "Small is Beautiful", "Good Work", and "A Guide for the Perplexed", who advocated for "appropriate technology" and sought to return philosophy, economics, and all the sciences towards Him who is ultimate.
- Peter Maurin, who stood behind Servant-of-God Dorothy Day

Friends of the Chesterbelloc,

I'm seeking to form another monthly discussion group. I have cherished the writings and thoughts of the great E.F. Schumacher and many others... thinkers who are to the very point and heart of issues in the world around us; to work against the construction of Moloch. The contrarian Ivan Illich used an obscure term to describe such thought:

"**Counterfoil** research has two major tasks: to provide guidelines for detecting the incipient stages of murderous logic in a tool; and to devise tools and tool systems that optimize the balance of life, thereby maximizing liberty for all." - Ivan Illich in Tools for Conviviality

I want to keep things a little topical, so each month we'll (at least try to) read and discuss a book. Here's a smatterring of the sort of stuff I'm envisioning:

Names are not of the utmost importance, but I'm dubbing this (for now): *The Counterfoil Society*. Every obscurely-named societas needs an equally obscure meeting place, and so I'm offerring our horse barn. Our address is 3504 N 900 E Rd, Shirley, IL - a ways away from most of y'all in Peoria, but I figure I'll offer. I'm considering evening meeting times... either second Thursdays, third Fridays, or third Sundays.

The first book I'd like to read-through and discuss is E.F. Schumacher's "Good Work". Copies can be had [on the secondhand market](https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/good-work_ef-schumacher/416358/#edition=1994410&idiq=1135572) for cheap, and a [PDF version is available for free](https://terebess.hu/keletkultinfo/SchumacherGoodwork.pdf).

If you are interested, please reply because:
1. I won't continue piggybacking on the Chesterbelloc email list
2. I'd appreciate consideration on times
3. It'd be good to know how many chairs I need to furnish for the barn.

Thank you - and have a blessed Thanksgiving! |
