It's important to understand who your customer is. The more niche you can be the better. Drawing the person is best.
John
John is the founder of a startup that develops wearable health technology. His company is focused on creating innovative wearable devices that can monitor and improve people's health. John needs a mechanical engineer with expertise in embedded electronics and programming to help him develop and prototype his devices. Specifically, he needs someone who can design and build custom sensors, as well as program microcontrollers and write firmware for his devices.
Integrating into consumer-grade devices is not something I have experience or expertise in. This is NOT my forte. I wonder if this is the sort of thing that working with Helix could help me develop further (or, get an interview with them, and find out!)
Maria
Maria is the owner of a small manufacturing company that produces custom metal parts for various industries. She needs a mechanical engineer who can help her optimize her production line and increase efficiency. Specifically, she needs someone who can design and build custom machines and tools for her production line, as well as develop automation systems to streamline her manufacturing process.
This IS something I can do. It would benefit me greatly to be more proficient with 5S, or lean six-sigma techniques to do this. I wonder if this is the sort of thing that working at Getinge could help me develop further. Other manufacturing opportunities could help develop this further. Really getting close to the manufacturing side of things.
David
David is a researcher at a university who is working on a project to develop a custom experimental setup for studying the behavior of materials under extreme conditions. He needs a mechanical engineer who can design and build custom components for his setup, as well as program microcontrollers to control and monitor the experimental parameters. Specifically, he needs someone who can design and build high-precision measurement systems, as well as develop custom control algorithms for his experimental setup.
All about it. There's stuff I'd have to learn as I go along but this is stuff I've DONE BEFORE.
