Fr Rip Notes

  • aristotle: once we develop good habits, the moral life becomes easier
  • after the fall, we want to do with our time whatever we please (at whim); we don't want to tie up our free time.
  • something in the morning, something in the middle, something in the evening
  • some meditation
  • spiritual reading (can be even 5 mins)
  • recollection is the segway into contemplation; extremely difficult to enter the transforming union without recollection
  • reasons fervor advances then pans out
    • dissipation; get distracted by worldly things
    • inconsistency in prayer life
  • What are you going to do to root out your defects?
    • This should be systematic
  • The building of virtue - perfecting specific virtues (pick one and work on it)
    • If you don't have regimen you'll never get there
  • Vows can be temporary and conditional
    • Should be done solemnly - in front of a priest/tabernacle
    • Use vows to develop rather than avoid
  • Families should pray together 15-30 mins ideally
    • Goal is self-sufficient spirituality by age of 18
  • Daycares as traumatic (why can't they empathize with people?)
    • The mother can direct the child in the right direction

Systematic rooting out of defects

  • What are my defects?

    • Right now: inattentiveness / two-minded-ness
  • What can be done?

    • Set real timers for prayer
    • Pray for this virtue
    • Compile a list of prayer intentions
  • What virtue do I need to develop?

    • This month, it's gratefulness.
  • How can I do it?

    • For all good things, send back a serious heartfelt thank you
    • Write a weekly letter to Noelle
    • Thank God every evening during the recollection
